Outfit Post: My 90s Jeans

When I was in high school, I had one pair of jeans that really fit me. They were mid-rise, although I wasn’t familiar with the term then. It wasn’t until a couple of years later when I was in college and the Brazilian ultra low-rise came to town that I realized just how much fabric my 90s jeans were made from.

My high school 90s jeans we flared at the bottom to be almost bellbottoms, but not quite. They were stretchy. I could sit down without fear that my booty crack would be flashing the world. Here’s something you may not know: I’ve got a good sized booty. That makes it really difficult to wear low-rise jeans and any sort of crop top. I like the look, but I don’t like having to constantly pull up my pants while sitting or checking for decency.

Thankfully (because my butt has gotten a little bigger over the years) the 90s mid-rise and high-rise styles are back in stores. I’ve still got my low-rise for different looks, but this has been such a great trend to have back. This pair is actually a tad loose on me and I’m planning to have them tailored at the waist for a truly perfect fit. It typically doesn’t cost much at an alteration establishment.

I got this awesome shirt from H&M around October. Who doesn’t love a shirt with sushi all over it? I tend to lean towards a playful look in my day-to-day clothes, and I think that this shirt adds a bit of whimsy to basic jeans. That’s if you want to label these jeans as basic. Check out the super deep pockets to stick your hands into. Don’t you hate when they give you a tiny little slit of a pocket that you can’t even stick your phone into for a moment? Or worse, fake pockets! The worst.

Take a look at the bottom of these jeans. Do you see that stitching at the bottom? There were actually two of those. In other words, there was another inch thick panel on these jeans that I cut off to make the length fit. I’m pretty short at 5 feet so, yeah, jean lengths can be a challenge when I’m not prepared to pay over $50 for a pair. The look of two panels was also really cool, but I think the company did an intentional choose-your-own-length type of thing with these.

These jeans are not too thin and have a lot of stretch which thighs and booties require. The waist is high and comfortable. I can wear a little shirt like this and just show a little skin or a crop top and show more. But the thing I really love is that if I go to a restaurant, or anywhere for that matter, I won’t have to worry that my booty is showing. We’ve all seen that and it ain’t classy.

Finally, I have an unhealthy obsession with glasses, both regular and sunglasses. I don’t need glasses with my vision, but I buy fake ones all the time! I have a basket full of glasses. I may do a post dedicated to my crazy collection of glasses! Would you like to see something like that? I like to call these my Harry Potter glasses.

My favorite part of this outfit? If someone sees me on the street, they’ll have a hard time pinpointing the “type” of person that I am. Cool? Nerdy? Demure? Sexy?

Have fun with your clothes everybody! Thanks for reading, and let me know what you think about styles coming back. Do you soak up nostalgia or do you prefer to keep moving forward? Which has been your favorite nostalgic style trend?

  1. Those jeans are killer! I have the same top, but in a long sleeve style (my boyfriend got it for me) SO CUTE
I’d love to check out your glasses collection. I’ve recently gotten over my unhealthy habit of buying a pair of sunglasses from every store I go into lol

    1. Whoa, what are the chances we have the same shirt! Your man has good taste, eh 🙂 Aaaaand you’re a glasses lover too. I’m gonna make that post just for you! Too bad we don’t live near each other. We could take a photo in our shirts together.

  2. Eeks I need to confess something. I buy fake glasses too! They give me a lot of leeway to gather more for less. Isn’t that actually fun? And, listen to this, they say that the coating of protection on these fake glasses from UV rays actually works! xx

  3. I wanted to wear glasses so bad to get the sexy librarian look but I have never thought of buying fake ones. I’ll buy some now and fulfill my teenager dreams. Those jeans are just AMAZING. Why do I always go for skinny jeans? No idea. I need to buy some flattery, grown up pants soon. And maybe a few midi-skirts. I love the T-shirts that H&M makes for their Divided collection. They’re usually really fun and affordable. I love H&M in general. I don’t miss working there but I do miss checking out clothes as soon as they come into the store and, of course, my 25% staff discount.xx

    1. Yes, I’m so glad you’ve discovered the way to your dream. The sexy librarian is one of my favorite looks. I have a few cat eye glasses for the occasion. You’ll see them soon enough. Go get yours!
And I have no clue how any women can work in a retail store and not lose their entire paycheck every week, or else go mad with desire…

  4. I would love to see your glasses collection. As someone who wears glasses due to terrible eyesight, I am always confused by those who want to wear them 😂 They have become somewhat of a fashion statement. I’d love to buy a pair of fakes as they’re cheaper, but then I can’t see 😂

    1. Since I was a little kid, I always had this desire to wear glasses. I’ve always loved the look of them. I even had some for a year before my new eye doctor realized I was falsely diagnosed and never needed them. I had a red pair that I loved. I wonder, could you get the cheap frames and have them add the right prescription lenses to them?

  5. I share you annotation of tony or nil pockets but don’t love glasses. I have had to have corrective vision since I was 13 and my ears are crooked so glasses hurt and sit sideways on my face. Laser vision yes I did. I still wear sunglasses and now reading glasses. Stupid crooked ears. I could only see the last photo on your post in my reader so I think I really missed out based on comments above!

    1. Boy the age of technology! Really changing lives. I’m sorry about your crooked ears, those assholes. I wonder why they didn’t show up for you 😕 The dark side of technology. Thanks for reading anyway. 🙂

      1. I will go to your site and see the pics. Probably my slow internet connection here in the cool mountains. Did you see how I worked that in? My ears are assholes. I feel better saying that.

  6. I’m glad high rise jeans are starting to come back in now. Low rise were okay, but I’ve always been a bit obsessed with 90’s style clothing, and it’s been easier to find it lately.

    1. I agree, Britney. Low rise is really sexy, but not always the most comfortable. Growing up in the 90s, I couldn’t really tell that we had a distinct style. I thought we were boring compared to the other decades, but now in hindsight I see we had some cool ideas going on.

  7. I adore these jeans! I love that this style has returned. I too have been rocking the ultra flare, borderline bellbottom jeans since high school. Maybe it has to do with our height… I’m 5’2″…

    1. I used to beg God for two more inches, lol. It’s so funny, now that I can wear heels it’s no big deal. I’m actually wearing wedges with these. Still need to find a good pair in my length. They would fit you perfectly!

      1. I have never been able to find jeans at Target that would fit my rump, even with a bit of stretch in the material… Right now, I’m actually wearing my boho artist style from American Eagle; very similar to the ones above. 🙂

  8. Cool? Nerdy? Demure? Sexy?” Umm, now why are there only 4 choices!? 😛

Nostalgia or moving forward? I’d like to think that as I’ve aged, become more refined (haha) that I can be both. However, my daughter tells me frequently that I’m a total metrosexual soccer-dad athlete who wears non-stop Adidas. And I think she means well by that “compliment”(?). Yes? Maybe. But as you might guess Lyz, having a ridiculous obsession with Steampunk (Neuvo-Victorian) fashion — sometimes with a flare for Renaissance styles — that would probably lean toward the nostalgic, huh?

By the way, love, love, LOVE your anonymous glasses that keeps you sophisticatingly discreet… as if to HIDE something. Hmmmmm. (rubs chin pondering)

    1. I’m a treasure box of hidden somethings 😄 I still haven’t gotten myself a pair of Adidas in my whole life. Such a fail. I love the brand.
I saw your steampunk page on Pinterest and I think it’d be so cool if clothes like that were more accessible and not expensive as hell for good quality. Then the costume parties could commence full swing.

      1. I couldn’t agree more on the Steampunk accessibility or prices for quality. However, it is encouraging to see the fashion-style trend somewhat on the women’s side of daily and/or work attire. The choices, combinations, materials, outfits, etc, for women are ENDLESS and come with so much class! Not at all the case for American men. The variations of subtle Steampunk are certainly available in Europe so maybe in a few years it will catch on with clothiers in the states. I sure hope so! 🙂

        1. You’re so right. The men’s side is still quite a bit too costume attire for everyday wear, but everything filters in eventually. I love unique clothes on men, so that will be really cool to see when it gets here.

  9. Fake pockets- ugh!! What’s the purpose?!😑 love this look and the picture in general, I always pick up cute t shirts to pair with a nice pair of jeans or shorts. I wear prescription glasses and I use to hate it but now I love that you can rock so many cute frames🤓💛

    1. I wonder, does it have to do with the fact you’re an adult now and can buy more frames for yourself then your parents ever would? You probably had one or two and you were stuck with them.
