Central Park, New York City

There are families with children. There are couples. There are single people. They’ve all gathered in one green and sunny place. Central Park. New York City. We happen to get there on what seems to be the most beautiful day of the year. Sure it’s summertime, and it’s hot. But the old trees have grown strong and tall, hanging over our heads and curling down toward the lawn, heavy with their own weight. On this day, we enter mid-park.

Central Park is a large manicured park with a full day’s worth of attractions. We climb up to the tops of boulders and try our best to see the view.

Although I’m not advocating for wild and loose parenting, I suggest letting the kids run a little free. Let them climb the boulders and explore or have a solitary moment to relish the view.

From the Alice In Wonderland statue that children love climbing, to the 6-acre Conservatory Garden, to The Loch, there is so much to see and enjoy in Central Park. Again, the park is quite large and you can easily make a day of exploring and lounging, walking or biking, picnicking or bird watching. Or some combination of these things!

While taking our leisurely stroll through the park, we happened onto something dear to my heart. The Shakespeare Garden.

Created in 1913, The Shakespeare Garden replicates the gardens of England and, most especially, features plants and flowers that were mentioned in Shakespeare’s writing. I hope you’re ready for quite a few photos.

Plaques such as this one are scattered about the Garden, indicating a passage of Shakespeare’s work in which the plant appears.

As you can probably tell, the Great Lawn is where many people come to read, picnic or just lounge in the sun. Just off of this picture was a woman sunbathing in her bikini.

The Great Lawn is also where many concerts are held. On this day, there was to be a symphonic performance later in the evening. It’s a good idea to check Central Park’s website for anything upcoming that you may like to experience.

Although New York City is often painted with a single impression of big city energy, I hope that you’ll get to see that it’s not all flashing lights and yellow taxis. The city is as diverse as the people who live there, and it truly has something for everyone. So pack some sandwiches.

  1. Lovely photos, Lyz. You look pretty, and that bow on missy’s hair, adorable. Precious times with the kids, I bet 🙂 I am heading to Central Park the upcoming weekend and soak in the green beauty of it xx

    1. I wish that every city could have a place like Central Park. And they maintain it so beautifully too. I have this dress in two colors because I loved it so much. Lesson from growing up, always buy every color lol.

    1. I can totally understand what you mean by mythical. It’s one of those places that everyone dreams of. It’s also pretty grimy in many places, lots of trash cans and construction on the roads. But for me, the things it has to offer outweigh that. I’m sure you’ll get there some day. NZ is pretty far, so you may do all of Europe first, make your way across!

  3. We cannot agree more. Each time we visit this park, and we visit numerous times each year, we are awestruck. How can something so vast and vibrant and green be found hedged in by a city–a towering fence of steel, glass and concrete? It baffles the mind. Have you also checked out Morningside Park (Harlem) and Prospect Park (Brooklyn) by the same architects?

    1. A beautiful description. I haven’t been to either of the others yet. There’s so much to see. I’d love to get to know Harlem and Brooklyn as well. I’ve heard great things about both, and the history alone!

  4. Wow, lovely photos! you and your kids are gorgeous. I have been there last 2014 when the cruise line that I was working with before docked in New York. I remember how my friends and I would pose in every corner to have our photos taken. I absolutely love that park. By the way your writing skills is amazing ❤

    1. Hey, thanks so much for coming by! We’re swapping travel stories today. 😊 That must’ve been an amazing experience working on a cruise ship with friends. This was my first time going with my kids to NYC, and they had no idea how often I’d be stopping to take pictures (about every 30 seconds.) So I know exactly what you mean. There’s so much beauty to capture. And thank you so much 💜 I appreciate the compliment.

      1. My pleasure 🙂 That’s true.. Looking forward on your next adventure. Working on board was a great experience especially having the perks of traveling for free 😀 My friends told me that the hotel you’re seeing from the lake of the park is the hotel where maid in Manhattan was shot.. I am not sure though if it’s true 🙂 I am planning to post all the places that I have been to in my blog hopefully soon 🙂

    1. Oh my goodness, yes, you’ve got to go more! They always have concert series and cool stuff happening, or just pack a book and some magazines and a lunch. Also, since you love photography, make sure you clear some storage space because you’re going to want to take so many photos.
