Question: “What’s for dinner?” Answer: Rice and beans and chicken.

Knock, knock.

“Who’s there?”

Rice and beans and chicken… Okay, I’m taking this too far, but gosh darn it if I cook this meal one more time I’m gonna throw a pot.

It’s not that I’m incapable or disinterested in cooking anything else. It’s not that my taste buds are dead or boring party poopers. So what’s my freaking problem?! Why is it that I’m borderline obsessed with collecting new recipes when I actually attempt none of them? At any given time my phone gallery will have screenshots of recipes and accompanying photos from magazines I peruse in the grocery and bookstore. My home will have food magazines, hand written recipes, and recipe cards collected from many shopping trips. Yet when I’m confronted with the dinner question I always fall back to my same old reliables. Obviously rice, beans, and chicken isn’t the only thing I make, but it might as well be as far as any food loving, cooking person is concerned.

Don’t get me wrong, I have perfected rice and beans and chicken and it’s damn good when I make it. But…

I want to be domesticated damn it. I want people to want to come over to my house specifically to eat food. I want them to hear that I’m cooking and try to weasel an invite. I want them to tell me it was delicious. I want them to ask where I got the idea. I want them to ask about my methods and ingredients. I want to have a party in my mouth when I taste the food that I’ve worked hard on with my own two hands.

But alas, no one comes to my house for food. My company, yes. Laughs and drinks, yes. A movie, yes. Food? It’s bordering on hell no. No one asks me about my methods in a good way. They ask me about my methods in a What-went-wrong? way. There’s never a party in my mouth after hours of effort put into shopping and cooking for some new recipe, just a disappointed “Wtf happened? It should taste way better than this.”

I’m tired of this. How can I ever throw an epic dinner party at this rate?

A few months ago I made a pact with myself to try out two new recipes every month as part of my self-improvement, personal growth plan. You want to know, dear Reader, how long it lasted? The embarrassing answer is that I’ve never fulfilled a single month’s quota. I know. I know. My head is bowed in shame as we speak, and I tell you all of this to shame myself publically. I deserve it. I love food. I want to cook, but something isn’t connecting. Somewhere in my mind or the universe, some chain is broken or some wire fried, someone has tripped over a cord and unplugged the necessary power source of motivation. I am in the dark. I trip and fall over the same meal.

I can decorate the hell out of a house but cooking is the thorn in my side, the stone in my shoe. Help! Does anyone else suffer from this malady and do you have any words of support or free food to offer? What’s helped you to break out of your cooking ruts?

    1. Lol, a good bad happy chore 😀 yes, you cleared that up well. Haha. But no, seriously, I know what you mean. There are times that I get really into a zone and things are tasting great and I enjoy it. And I love when it’s over and get to eat it. But most of the times I try a new recipe it turns out mediocre, like damn I just spent 4 hours on this!

That’s a great idea to go pick up a new ingredient and work around that. I remember in Thailand there were so many foods I had never seen before and I was definitely curious.

  1. Well… some lady I work with gave up a zucchini that probably weighed close to 10lbs- it was enormous! So I took that puppy home and made dinner with it 2 nights in a row. Meals that I’ve never even heard of before Pintrest. The first night, I made fried parmesan zucchini sticks with marinara dipping sauce. Yum! The second night, I made zucchini pasta with avocado pesto (made from scratch) and jumbo shrimp. Double yum!

Though you may not have access to free produce, maybe pick one out at the store, look up some recipes for it on Pintrest and go for it. Pick something and get inspired. That might help. 🙂

    1. How awesome is that! First of all, both of those dishes sound so freaking delicious. I’ve had fried parmesan with marinara and it’s so good, but I never even tried to make it. Thanks for the great advice. I have mangoes at home for free. Maybe mango salsa! 😃 Thanks for the tip.

    1. I keep saving pictures but never remember or feel motivated to try something new when the time comes. Listen I only really made a serious effort to learn to cook when my son was born. Before that, I was eating cereal like it was a superfood.

  2. My advice–get good at editing. So much of what we read and see on various sites is ridiculously difficult. Get good at picking the easy ones. Perfect those, and everyone will hug you. There’s nothing better than a home cooked meal together.

    1. You’re so right. Some of these recipes look beautiful and I dream of making them, but I don’t have at this point that kind of patience in my life. I should be thinking two new simple recipes a month. One of them a casserole and one of them a slow cooker!

  3. I started with the easy ones two years back. Even now I try a difficult recipe very rarely. Sometimes it even takes more than once to get a recipe right. I try to bake bread and have failed three times till now. Dont give up, keep on trying..

    1. Hey Megha, thanks for your input! You make a valid point that I hadn’t considered which is that it sometimes takes multiple attempts to get it right. I don’t normally try a recipe again if I failed it and that should definitely change! 😅

Some years ago, a friend let me borrow her bread machine and bread making came to be my favorite thing to do. I missed it when it was gone. I would love to try it 100% from scratch one day. Maybe by then you’ll be a pro and can give me some pointers. Till next time, thanks for coming by.

  4. I can only bake apparently, which doesn’t make for a good dinner party (maybe the dessert??), so I’m of no help there. Can you call on any friends who can give you tips on cooking? If not, then just keep trying and working on recipes 🙂

  5. Dude (how I love this word – once in a blue moon) just come over to mine. We can chuck onions at each other and cook. The chicken and beans we shall keep safe in the pot.

On a different note, I have to tell you about the (strange) trifle I once made. A bunch of friends came over and one of them gobbled it down so fast that I actually fell down on the floor laughing. I was horizontal for a few seconds and I am not prone to exaggeration. What trauma it must have been for him – I know because I took a bite and I was ready to hurl. I had to put in too much kahlua. So …

    1. That’s hilarious! I don’t think I’ve ever tormented someone with a trifle or a meal, so that’s a win for my corner. 😀 You figured kahlua is great so more must be better, huh? Life lessons 😂 Kahlua has a limit!

    1. Hey, I’ve been fighting to be domesticated for ever and ever, hence my blog name. I’ve got a whole category for domestic disaster, lol. I’ve gotten to cooking regularly but I can’t manage to get the variety part. I guess if I was a domestic goddess I’d just be too much for the world to handle… It’s what I tell myself to sleep at night.
