Going Vegan Part Two

Here we are, Part Two. Breakfast has been nothing special. It was the same all week. Peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat with black coffee. I tended to be starving by lunch because I wasn’t paying attention to the time and there were very few snacks in my house that I could eat. You’ll recall that I was also challenging myself to not go out and buy a load of groceries.

I reinstituted some daily routines that I hadn’t executed consistently since Hurricane Irma blew me off course. Lemon water in the morning; cucumber water throughout the day.

The chili lasted for 3 days. The kids, newly foodies apparently, weren’t fooled by the vegan sausage that I cubed and added in. They couldn’t articulate what was the matter with it, but they were certain that it was weird and not in a good way. Though that portion of my plot was foiled by texture, they were perfectly happy with copious amounts of chili, so it was an overall win.

This photo shows a combination of brown rice, basmati rice and tri-colored quinoa. Eventually I ran out of brown rice, and as I’m saving money, I went to basmati and quinoa. Surprisingly, the cook times worked well together and it was delicious. To be honest, brown rice does not get my panties in a bunch, so I was glad for the luxury.

To prevent the build up of natural gases, I switched things up with veggie pasta, pasta sauce and vegan chicken strips. I figured that the sauciness of the sauce and the gumminess of the pasta would blend with the one vegan element, but alas, once again my kids remark that something just ain’t right. They start asking me if I’d like to eat their portions of “chicken”. Darn it again.

I wouldn’t have minded so much except I really wanted them to be fooled. What do parents love more than fooling their children? Oh, getting them to actually eat stuff knowingly and without a battle. The second reason I minded their not wanting the chicken is because the meal had no real other protein source from what I can tell.

My pasta tends to include mushroom, onion, bell pepper, asparagus… all things that my son would pretend to choke and die on. If you haven’t already realized it, I’m not one of those parents who raised their kids to love vegetables. I failed in that parenting department. My daughter will give things a try, my son will go into convulsions; fruit included.

I had almost forgotten that loading up on carbs for every meal doesn’t exactly fit into my fitness plan, so I moved back to my big trusty salads, minus the feta cheese I love so much.

I survived the 5 days, obviously. I wouldn’t say that I flourished, but that’s partly my fault for not buying more plant based ingredients in preparation. I’ve gotten a few comments on what a different world it will be if I actually prepare. One of my readers, fellow blogger and vegan herself Books,BooksAndMoreBooks recommended a great dessert: frozen banana and almond milk blended to make ice cream! I’ll definitely check it out, and I’ll search the web for other great recipes. Things are looking up.

What I’ve realized from 5 days on a vegan diet:

  1. It’s possible to survive without fainting.
  2. Even with limited resources, there is much that can be eaten.
  3. Most pastries of any kind are not vegan, and that stabbed me in the heart.
  4. There’s a lot of fruits and vegetables in the world and most of them get ignored.
  5. Doing this everyday of my life is too monumental a task for me at this stage in life.
  6. My going vegan at some stage in life is possible.
  7. I’ve been consuming a heck of a lot of animal products which aren’t beneficial for my own health or the environment.
  8. I had no idea that I knew more than 2 vegans before I posted this.
  9. I’m excited to eat a primarily vegan diet.
  10. I’m going to have to start cooking and planning more.

You might be expecting me to say that I ended the 5 days feeling invigorated and renewed. That’s the way I’ve always felt after going vegetarian. Alas, I’m going to need to go shopping. A week of chili, rice, pasta and salad did not leave me in the best spirits. But I am going to go ahead and say this: the kids had their weekly pizza on day six and I let that be my non-vegan meal. All I wanted for the rest of the day was to sleep. Like, don’t wake me for two days sleep. So I’m thinking that means something. I’m off to look for recipes and do some grocery shopping.

    1. Omfreaking g. I can’t believe how great that sounds. Where the hell have I been all these years? I’ll be adding this to my list of things to try out. Seriously, sweets never seemed very important to me, but going vegan made me realize that I need some sweet stuff on occasion, and not an apple either! Thanks for the tip, sugar pie.


  1. I have not tried veganism but I gave up red meat for an entire year. I will say it got easier as time went by. You find things that you like and stick with them, then it becomes the norm. I’m sure it’s the same with veganism. Good for you for being so aware of your food though. That’s better than most, I’m sure!

    1. My brother did a year free of red meat as well. I find that easier to relinquish on a day to day basis, but anytime I have a strong craving for meat, it’s always steak or something like that. Restaurants is where my challenge always came in because I mainly save red for someone else to cook for me. I bet that it does become the norm, it’s just the getting there. Oh boy.

    1. I’m totally in awe that those can even exist. I would like to know how good everything tastes. I’m always hearing jokes about vegan desserts tasting like cardboard… or maybe that was gluten-free, lol. What have you tried off the menu? Or are you planning a visit? You could do a Tea and Tales vegan edition. I don’t know how revolutionary the idea is, but it sounds cool to me. 🙂

      1. I took a friend and we had the Red Velvet Cupcake and a Peanut Butter Chocolate one. All I could taste was good!! They’ve come a long way in GF and Vegan foods. Now you can buy GF cake mix. But make no mistake, if I see a coconut cream pie, I’m no longer a vegan. I’m a pie eater!!! lol

  2. Team I need meat! Lol. I was a vegetarian/tried to go vegan from age 18 til 28ish. Then I added meat back in little by little with mixed feelings about it all. Then…I turned 31, got pregnant with first kid and have mercy I have never craved anything in my life the way I craved red meat. I’d pull into the drive-thru line at Moe’s (yes. ‘Welcome to Moe’s!!’) and I’d order a steak burrito with extra steak. Oh mercy, it was a sad state of my world. I dreamed of dead cows. Nothing satisfied me except red meat. Sigh… I eat meat in moderation now and alternate meals sans meat, but my mental state is better when I get meat regularly. I’ve been thinking of trying to go vegan again lately…but don’t know if I can do it. I do think when I did it before my diet was majorly lacking in fat…so I’d up my good-fat game if I decide to do it again. We’ll see. I get cranky and have all kinds of blood sugar dips without meat. I’m following along your meatless journey. Maybe one day I’ll join you. Maybe. Don’t hold your breath tho. Lol.

    1. Oh Viv, I’m definitely one of those people who crave meat, all the time. There are some out there you never really liked it to begin with and I am not one of those people. For me, it’s a goal to work towards. Agriculture is demolishing the planet and I want to help, but as of this moment, I can’t say that I’m 100% committed. I’ll be working hard to eat a mostly vegan diet. I get more cranky without carbs, and cranky is stating it lightly; raving bitch! Actually, any food deprivation of a few hours turns me wild, much like pregnancy does, lol.

      1. Totally hear you on what the meat industry is doing to the environment. It’s awful!!! I applaud you. We all need to do our part. Maybe…just maybe I’ll jump in again or at least work on less. I just have to figure out how to not dive head first into the chip aisle on my weekly grocery runs. Lol
