Outfit Post: Pleated Skirt and Crop Top

I remember when I was younger looking through some of my mother’s old photographs and loving the clothes she wore. Fitted button down floral tops tucked neatly into white high-waisted bellbottoms, tailored for her body.

“Where are these clothes,” I would ask her. The answer was always the same: “Long gone.”

It really disappointed me that she hadn’t thought, in those years before I was born, to save me anything from her closet. To be fair, I did get some jewelry, but I always forget to wear jewelry so…

This linen pleated skirt will be going to my daughter. I’ve had it for longer than both my children have been alive. In fact, I’ve had it for most of my adult life. I picked it up at a thrift store and fell in love. We’ve been married ever since.

When I first got the skirt, I saw it as dressy and typically wore it with heels; and while I still do like to dress it up, I’ve found that it works just as well for a more casual look.

Here I paired it with one of my new favorites, these Cole Haan tennis shoes (link below) in rose gold. I’m so happy that rose gold has made a comeback. I like to think of it as neutral dressed up for a date. They also come in silver and gold, but something about this color feels more versatile to me.

This black crop top has to be one of the best most useful purchases I’ve made in the clothing department. It’s so versatile and comfortable.

I can pair it with so many things from midi skirts to high-waisted jeans. I also like how it has a high collar but it’s cropped, so it’s like demure sexy.

Yes, my skirt is wrinkled. I’ve used an iron maybe once in the past two years and I ain’t ashamed. I’m finding people some people are just like me and others are shocked that I rarely iron. How are you with ironing? I’ve been taking an informal survey with my friends.

I really enjoyed creating a short video of my outfit and I hope you all enjoyed it as well. I love coming up with new ways to make projects more fun and creative. I must say thank you to my friend Quetsy for capturing these lovely images on beautiful Las Olas Boulevard.

I’m just getting my iwannabealady YouTube channel off the ground and I would truly madly deeply appreciate your support in going over to my page, giving it a like and subscribing to my channel. I have lots of great content planned for you all and I don’t want you to miss it. Plus, you guys are my first line of defense against this cold world. 🙂 But for real though…

Questions: How comfortable are you with mixing styles? Has your mom or female family member given you any of their old clothes or jewelry, and do you wear it? Are there any pieces in your closet that you’d like to hold on to for yourself or someone else?

Here’s how you can get the look, Ladies. The links are affiliated, so go on and support me and your wardrobe at the same time. FYI, these shoes are freaking comfortable.

  1. I’m turning 30 in like 6 weeks, and I have been on a mad mission to nail down a sense of style! I am not comfortable mixing style, but I always think it looks great on other people lol I considered doing an OOTD blog ( am still considering tbh) I love this look, and your video is great! Great light! Great music! Great you! I also love the braids!

    1. Oh thanks for sharing. Why do you feel you want to nail down a style? And which do you lean toward now? Every time I’ve tried I can’t because my style is everywhere depending on my mood. I guess my style is having lots of styles. Also, you know I’d love to see how you reflect yourself in clothes. I love making videos and I’m glad it finally dawned on me that I can use them here. Can’t wait to make more! 💜

        1. Thank you so much my love. You are my very first comment and subscriber, so if you thought we were bonded before… You’re never getting rid of me now. Your support is a big deal to me, truly. You’re supporting dreams, girl! Do you have a Pinterest page going for the looks that you love? You could email it to me. Speaking of, I need to email you!

    1. I try to buy stuff that won’t require too much time for me. I also sometimes use the steam shower trick, lol. I’m glad you like it. I used to call it my grandma skirt, and grandma is back in style, so yay! I never stopped wearing it anyhow. ☺

    1. I can definitely see how ironing can be soothing. It’s the same way with me and sweeping. For me, it’s one of those things that can be soothing once I’m in it, but I never feel like getting into it. I imagine that your home is as crisp and welcoming as a bed and breakfast. Even the pillowcases! Your ironing is like your sister with her hair and makeup. 🙂

      1. Yes, I guess I can’t laugh at my sister anymore. I keep house as if my mother was dropping in at any moment. Now that woman has issues. She ordered toilet paper to match her bathroom wall paper! We couldn’t use it. We had to use the Charmin under the sink. LOL

  2. I used to iron, but I haven’t in like…a year 😀
This outfit seems like it was made for you Lyz. Can’t go wrong with fitted tops and floaty skirts, although I always feel like it works better for long willowy peeps, like you 😀
Also, I had to laugh out loud at that guy who ducked out the way when you were filming. Is it common to see people walking around filming in the US? Cause here, it basically never happens. People take selfies and stuff, but no one really vlogs.

    1. Long and willowy?!?! I’m 5 foot nothing! And that’s a really good question. I haven’t seen many vloggers out on the streets. In certain parts of Miami, 30 minutes south, I’ll see some on occasion. I used to vlog last year on this other site that I had for girls, but it was all made in my house. I like being out on the street, but I’ll have to practice feeling comfortable with being looked at.

      1. Really?? I always thought you were tall for some reason. Although, I always assume everyone is tall. I think I’m around 5 foot too actually. I’m 155cm, but I’m not sure what that is in terms of feet and inches..

      1. Once, I started talking into my video out of nowhere not realizing that the couple in front of me was totally confused and thought I was talking to them as I was alone, haha. This was in Thailand and I was saying how I was so lost. It turned out to be hilarious. I still have that video.

    1. Thanks Shannon. At least someone’s parent was thinking about them! LOLOL I’m just kidding, of course, my mom is great- just doesn’t know how to save the good stuff. We live and learn. I’m excited for the YouTube stuff too. Thanks for your support sugar pie. 🙂 (insert heart emoji)

    2. There’s this velvet and lace black dress I’ve been begging my mom to give me for years. NOPE, she hasn’t lol I really wanted because it’s gorgeous, I’ve worn it before and it looks good on me (when I was thinner) and it’s from H&M from the 90’s. I worked at H&M so it kind of would have meaning for me

  3. NO IRONING ZONE HERE!!! For real, I might iron the occasional dress or shirt because it was left in the laundry basket for too long and it looks like a mop head. Other than that, no way I’m wasting energy just to get everything wrinkled as soon as I sit in the car lol You look so beautiful, girl. Your hair 🙂 ❤ I'd never thought about keeping something for my future daughter/s but I'm glad you've planted that idea on my brain, I'll definitely save a few of my favorites for her/them. I adore that skirt 🙂

    1. Yay, you’re future daughter will thank you. I feel connected to her already. I sometimes go with the let the shower steam take care of it strategy, but mostly I just pull on the fabric in every direction or buy stuff that requires no iron. 🙂

    1. Thanks girlie, I’m so glad you like it! They are so freaking easy to wear (which means I can wear big cotton panties all I want and no one is the wiser, lol). It’s so true that I can always tell when someone is in Florida! We’ve definitely got a foliage look 🙂
