I went to the thrift store this weekend. Oh oh. Because this place always manages to take a big slice of my paycheck, it’s a place I’ve been avoiding lately.
My whole house is thrift shop modern vintage, and I don’t know if that’s an actual design style, but it’s what I’ve got. It’s what I represent. There’s a messiness to it sometimes when new items come in and things are getting rearranged, or something is in the queue. But it’s always an interesting mess. I’m not comfortable with messy (Except in my car. My car will always be a mess. That’s for another post.) So sooner than not, most messes get taken care of pretty quickly.
So, I love the thrift store, and it loves me. I decided that since I really do need a dresser, that I would go. But no careless spending, Lyz! You are here for a dresser! Okay. I walk in, and the next thing a know, a guy is asking if I need any help with a chair. Apparently, I’m in the chair department and looking eager…
I escape the chairs and stroll confidently into the wooden furniture section. I’m doing well, until my eye catches something interesting, and it isn’t a dresser. It’s this little side table with a mid-century feel.
It gets better.
I’m a little upset that I can’t take it home with me. It’s marked $15, and I’m sure I could negotiate it down to $10, maybe $8. I probably wouldn’t paint it, but if I did, a hot pink would be in order. What’s a girl to do?
Suddenly, I remember you guys, my Readers! I decide that I can write a post showcasing some of the finds around my neighborhood thrift store. Yes! I’m always admiring these great pieces with no other way to showcase them but in my living room.
And I think that’s it. I love many of the pieces I come across so much that I want the world to see them and appreciate them too. Sort of like when you have a hot boyfriend. Also, I like looking at cool things. Also, I like looking cool. Also, I am cool, darn it. Well, at least my home is, which is good enough for me. It’s an ongoing work of love. Back to the thrift store.
I speak to a guy who works in the furniture department and I tell him about my epic battle to not lose my shit. We share plenty of witty banter mixed in with the haggling, and in the end, I get a good deal on this dresser. Actually, I wish I would’ve tried for less. Oh well, what are you gonna do? It was a decent price at $30.
Then there is this working station with the pretty hinges. I’ve noticed recently that I have a thing for tools of the trade.
This curvy side table, just begging for a home.
I’m intrigued by this thing, but I’m afraid to open it. Where has it been? Who’s played its keys?
Who remembers this!
Something for the co-worker you secretly can’t stand…
So, the moment of truth. I came to the thrift store for one item. Did I make it? No. It was a damned mission impossible, and you all know it. You knew it the entire time you were scrolling through this post. But, to be fair, I got something that I just had to get. There was no escaping. I found this sweet piece of brass just sitting on a corner. I had to pull over and give it a holler.
Now I know that some of you are recalling just about now that I live in Florida where there are no fire places with fires that might need stoking. To you I say, Stop being negative. Jeez. They needed a home and I’ve always wanted a set. I’ve read a lot of 19th century books over the years and watched every old movie that Blockbuster Movies had to rent for excessive prices. Remember Blockbuster?
Anyhow, they have a certain thing that makes me want them. And they are heavy. And I’ve got the perfect place for them. You’ll see. I’ll make an update post just for the purpose, so there!
Now I’ll leave you with what I paid…. 3 dollars. Yesssss, come to the dark side.
Ahhh, you’re my time of person! ❤ thrifting is the best, and I'm pretty sure my home is "thrift shop modern vintage" style too. Thanks for giving me the unofficial name for it 😉 And now you're making me want to write a thrifting post….
P.S. that dresser is GORGEOUS! can't wait to see what you do with it.

I totally replied, but WordPress has been acting up and now the reply is missing
Let’s see uhh, I said yess, let’s show off our thrifty cutesie homes! My blog is all pirates for May, but I think June is perfect for a thrifting post. Plus June is perfect garage sale weather 😉

I actually did see that and I think I liked it. WordPress has been acting really crazy for me, like straight wacky. I just got a new laptop and wasn’t sure. The comment box in notifications is the worst. June in Florida is the best for summertime sales. By July/August it’s sweltering. It’s drive-by garage sales. Just slow down and scan. Only exit the car if something really good forces me to, lol. Can’t wait to show off hahaha

Yes, most the time the comment box in notifications won’t even show up for me! I’m so glad it’s not just me. I mean, maybe that’s worse lol, but hopefully that means WP is on it. So frustrating.
Really September and May I think are the best for garage sales, assuming there’s no rain of course. Perfect weather 🙂

I have the octagon shaped end tables. Plus 4 more I couldn’t just leave at the side of the road. I would love to see what you do to the dresser. That curtain is very interesting!

I can’t believe you have the tables! What are the chances? Confession: the shop was having a sale so I went back and bought it, hehe. I’ll have to resell it though. My brother and I are considering splitting a storage unit to refurbish and sell our thrifting treasures. So much goodness out there. And better than thrift stores are bulk trash days, heck yeah. 🙂

I know! I love after yard sales too! My hubby works at a country club and they are always throwing out perfectly good high end furniture. I’m always right there with my hands out! lol

Thrift stores are so much fun. I always tend to drift to the clothes section, but homewares often call me over too. I love dressers, I really want one, but I have absolutely no space in my tiny flat. Once we have a house though, I will go nuts finding lots of cool stuff to throw in it. That framed picture of the clowns freaked me out, I wonder how someone would react if you gifted it to them XD

Oh, don’t get me wrong, the clothes pull me in too. Here’s to getting space to decorate to your liking soon enough. Of course, homes suck money, so take your time 🙂 Did it really freak you out? Ha! That’s what I was going for. I should have bought it just to see the look on a person’s face. 🙂
