Outfit Post: Velvet

I have loved velvet all of my life. When I was a teenager, my super cool cousin with all the super cool clothes, got a shirt in black velvet. Knowing how my family was struggling financially at the time, I dared not ask to have this dream of owning something, anything in velvet, fulfilled. I worked up the nerve to ask my cousin if I could try hers on, but she said no; and she was a braggart; and I had dreams about stealing it from her.

See, the thing is, velvet should only be reserved for nice people. It’s just so soft, so textured with imagination. Velvet has so much to offer and it was being wasted on meanie over there. It was enough to make me sick.

When I see velvet, I think of lovely things. Images of lavish dinner parties with lots of cheese, wine and laughter. Also, wild gardens. Gardens filled with deep greens and fat pink and burgundy flowers dripping down from stone walls, heavy in their beauty. So when mean people wear velvet, it goes against all of nature.

I’m glad that velvet is having a comeback because now I can stockpile pieces for posterity instead of rifling through thrift stores for the odd find. Not that I won’t still do that anyway.

What do I love about this outfit? The perfect dusty rose of the top signals to me Victorian England, even if it may or may not be historically accurate. I enjoy being reminded of other times and places, whether it’s the 1980s or the 1800s. I love the movement of both the top and bottom. Movement in fabric makes me feel more womanly. Does it have the same effect for you? Tight feels sexy, flowy feels womanly. Also, I love the way that the color changes in the folds. I love to run my hands along my body when I wear velvet.

Sometimes I wear the skirt with a simple crop top to emphasize the high waist. Sometimes I wear the top with a pair of tight dark jeans. Either way, these are two pieces that are never leaving my closet. Unless I pass them on to my daughter. Velvet is, after all, for nice people.

  2. I share the same sentiments. I remember my mom had a few velvet items that I would “borrow”. When I got older I had a velvet dress that I LOVED, but it was during the time that people weren’t really wearing it. NOW, I’m glad that it’s back, but I’m still on the fence. I actually contemplated purchasing gold crushed velvet opened toed shoes…I didn’t purchase though. šŸ˜©šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™„

    1. Gold crushed velvet open toed shoes? You better get off of this computer and go get them! That’s an order. You’ll probably wear them 3 times in your life, but when you do, you’ll feel like the coolest woman on the block! Don’t you wish that our mothers had kept all of their cool clothes? I need to start a keep forever collection for my daughter now šŸ™‚

      1. I’m sure it’s too late because they were at tj maxx! Yes I want to feel cool again lol and I’ve deff thought about keeping things for my daughter as well. She already tried to inherit a few things, just have to keep those one time only pieces and not throw them out.

  4. Yes, velvet is definitely a fabric with a lot of magic. It has royal quality to it. It makes me imagine past times – queens and kings dressed in velvet – not always nice people, though ;). I really like your outfit. The cut of the skirt nicely matches the frill of the blouse – very feminine and ladylike :). My velvet blouse is black and tight-fitting with a basquine from fake leather. I also like the look of it.

    1. Yes, the kings and queens. I forgot about them. Definitely not all nice! But it is so royal. If I could get my hands on a thick draping velvet cape that would be awesome. I’d go find a really cold place and rock it.
      Sometimes, full blown feminine is a nice change.

  5. I’ve always loved your profile picture, Lyz! I never actually realized that the top was velvet. It looks really nice, and the dusty rose colour suits you. Personally, I don’t like the feel of velvet, it’s so weird to me. I prefer silk for fancy fabrics. To each their own right šŸ˜€

    1. Thanks Angela! I just really love textures and silk is one of them. Just ask my 3 robes. It’s so interesting how different people can be. I never imagined anyone not liking the feel of velvet. I have a couple of sequin dresses that are beautiful but aren’t soft to the touch, especially for dancing. That bothers me.

    1. Only a writer would describe it as a fuzzy peach! Lol. Just don’t wear something that covers up too much. Less fabric will actually work better. A nice sleeveless velvet top and you can wear it with a sweater if you like. Or velvet boots! Ohh, now I’m longing.

  8. Haha, I’ve never heard that certain textiles reflected a wearer’s personality. The only time I’ve ever worn velvet was for Steampunk/Victorian get-togethers or conventions. I would absolutely wear (velvet) Steampunk/Victorian fashions much more often if it weren’t for two issues: 1) the Texas heat 8-months out of 12, and 2) the “standards” of professional work attire in a generally socially conservative state. LOL šŸ˜›

    1. Oh yeah, silk is sophisticated and sexy, denim is girl next door, wool is coffee shop and freelance graphic designer.
      I know all about the heat. It’s blazing out here. Thankfully, we’ve got lots of water for that.
